Migraine and Cardiovascular Risk

Women_feeling_headacheAccording to the Headache Classification Committee of the International Headache Society,[1] migraine affects nearly 15% of the population or about one billion people worldwide. In a general population cohort, performed by Adelborg K, et al., various risk factors in patients with migraine headaches were assessed. These included myocardial infarction, stroke (ischaemic and haemorrhagic), peripheral artery disease, venous thromboembolism, atrial fibrillation or atrial flutter, and heart failure.

A positive association between migraine and myocardial infarction, ischaemic/ haemorrhagic stroke, venous thromboembolism, and atrial fibrillation or atrial flutter was recognized. No meaningful association was found between peripheral artery disease or heart failure. Consequently, the study showed an association of migraine with increased risk of cardiovascular disease. In conclusion, “migraine should be considered a potent and persistent risk factor for most cardiovascular diseases in both men and women”.
