What is lactoferrin?

Lactoferrin is an iron-binding glycoprotein and one of the most abundant bioactive proteins in colostrum and breast milk.

Iron regulationBinds and transports iron, helping the body manage it safely
Immune modulationHelps support a balanced inflammatory response and innate immune defenses
Mucosal defenseProtects the surfaces of the gut and reproductive tract
Gut supportNourishes beneficial bacteria and the intestinal lining

The body makes lactoferrin throughout life, but production declines with age.

The first bio-identical lactoferrin

Why the human form is superior

Lactoferrin supplements have historically come from cow’s milk. Bovine lactoferrin matches only about 70% of the human amino acid sequence, and that 30% difference changes how it fits at human receptors. Our lactoferrin offering contains effera® lactoferrin, a breakthrough form which is 100% identical to human lactoferrin, so it docks cleanly and engages the same signalling as the body’s own protein.

Structurally identical to human lactoferrin
Recognized as native to the body, with no antibody response
Improved compliance with lower dosing
Precision-fermented from a natural source of yeast
Clinically studied
Low allergen, dairy free, vegan

Three target systems

Lactoferrin’s impact on gut, immune & women’s health

One molecule with three areas of focus, at every life stage. Start with the one that matches your patient.

Target system 1 · Gut health

Level up your GI protocol

One molecule, multiple mechanisms.

Lactoferrin supports the gut on several fronts at once. It binds LPS (lipopolysaccharides) at the mucosal surface, feeds beneficial bacteria and microbiome diversity, and helps strengthen the gut barrier.*

Consider for patients with

  • Nutrient malabsorption
  • Post-antibiotic recovery
  • Low beneficial bacteria
  • Gut barrier and permeability concerns

Key mechanisms

  • Binds LPS at the mucosal surface
  • Offers prebiotic effects that support microbiome diversity
  • Helps with gut barrier fortification and tight-junctions
  • Supports short-chain fatty acid production
  • Inhibits biofilm formation

Target system 2 · Immune support

A modulator, not a stimulator

Calibration, not just a boost.

Lactoferrin tunes the immune response up or down as needed. It helps quiet inflammatory triggers at the gut lining, supports immune cell maturation, and links the body’s first-line defenses with its longer-term response.*

  • Supports a healthy inflammatory response by lowering IL-6, TNF-α and hepcidin*
  • Binds LPS, a bacterial toxin, at the gut lining*
  • Supports healthy levels of mucosal secretory IgA*
  • Connects the gut-immune axis by supporting beneficial bacteria*

The iron connection

Why low iron and a compromised inflammatory response travel together

When the body’s inflammatory response is set on high, the liver makes more hepcidin, which locks iron away in storage. The result can be low iron despite adequate intake, along with weaker immune performance. By supporting a balanced inflammatory response, lactoferrin helps keep hepcidin in check so iron can move where it’s needed.*

Target system 3 · Women’s health

Every woman, across the lifespan

A regulator of women’s health.

Gut and immune concerns are disproportionately seen in women, so the whole lactoferrin story belongs to her. Lactoferrin supports iron balance, immune defense, bone strength and a balanced microbiome, including the vaginal microbiome.*

Five women at different life stages, from young adult to pregnancy, motherhood and midlife

Across the cycle and through every stage

  • Menstruation and heavy menstrual bleeding
  • Pregnancy, prenatal and postnatal
  • Postpartum recovery
  • Perimenopause and menopause
  • Athletic and high-demand women

Key benefits

  • Iron balance
  • Bone strength
  • Immune defense
  • Balanced microbiome, including vaginal microbiome support

Clinical insight: iron optimization without supplemental iron

Two women (ages 31 and 39) with chronic low iron that hadn’t responded to standard iron supplements took effera® 100 mg a day, with no added iron. Ferritin rose in both.
